A recent story from Automotive News claims that Volvo is secretly developing the EX50, a small electric crossover. It is intended to take the place of the outdated EX40 in the United States at some point in 2027.
How much might the alleged Volvo cost?
This is the section that drew my interest. The EX50 is said to be longer and taller than the EX40, despite being less expensive. Over time, the US auto market has rewarded this.
Pricing is anticipated to be in the upper $40,000 level, which is significantly less than the EX40’s current starting price of $56,545. For those who are just catching up, the quoted price is almost $10,000 less than the recently released EX60.
According to reports, the EX50 and EX60 would share their SPA3 foundations. This new model would essentially become Volvo’s most affordable entry into its electric lineup in America, as the smaller EX30 will no longer be available after this year.
In reality, where is it being constructed?
As of right now, Volvo’s brand-new factory in Kosice, Slovakia, is scheduled to start production in the spring of 2027. For those who are just catching up, the facility has a budget of about $1.25 billion and can handle up to 250,000 vehicles per year. However, AutoForecast Solutions experts estimate the EX50’s own production to be closer to 90,000 units annually, which sounds a little more modest.
This also has a really intriguing subplot. Due to trade regulations, Polestar, Volvo’s corporate brother, was recently prohibited from selling automobiles in the United States. The planned Polestar 7 crossover will no longer be produced as a result of the ban, which goes into force with the 2027 model year.
According to reports, some of the design work from that aborted vehicle is being transferred to the EX50. None of this has been publicly confirmed by Volvo. Nonetheless, the business has stated that before summer ends, it would unveil two new EVs.
