There may be plans to develop a less expensive Galaxy Watch with a battery life longer than a week. – The flagship Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and the Galaxy Watch 9 series are two of Samsung’s most current high-end smartwatches. Both are somewhat expensive, but Samsung might already be working on a less expensive option.
SamMobile discovered references to a new smartwatch known as the Galaxy Aero within the Galaxy Wearable app. More significantly, the code refers to it as “galaxy_rtos_watch,” indicating that it might not use Google’s Wear OS but rather a real-time operating system.
Why would Samsung employ RTOS, and what is it?
Real-Time Operating System is referred to as RTOS. It is a lightweight platform that uses a lot less memory and processing resources than Wear OS to swiftly complete a certain set of functions. Timekeeping, heart-rate monitoring, step counting, sleep tracking, and simple alerts are some of the functions that can be performed on a wristwatch. Compared to the application processors needed by Wear OS, RTOS may operate on low-powered microcontrollers with significantly less RAM.
These watches can also be produced at a far lower cost due to their simpler hardware. Samsung would have more room to compete with less expensive watches and fitness trackers from companies like Amazfit and Motorola as it wouldn’t require the same pricey processor, substantial amount of memory, or high-capacity battery found in its premium Wear OS models. Longer battery life is another benefit of lower power use. While most Wear OS models still require daily or biweekly charging, RTOS watches typically last a week or longer between charges.
There are drawbacks to longer battery life.
Wear OS functions more like a tiny Android phone. Google Maps, Wallet, Gemini, downloadable apps, and a specific area of the Google Play Store are all supported. Samsung’s own health tools, watch faces, and integrated apps would probably be necessary for an RTOS-based Galaxy watch. Notifications might provide fewer opportunities to respond or engage, and third-party app compatibility might be restricted.
This wouldn’t be the first wearable using RTOS from Samsung. With just 16MB of RAM, the FreeRTOS-powered Galaxy Fit 3 can manage media controls, fitness tracking, sleep monitoring, and rudimentary alerts. Its tiny 208mAh battery has a nearly two-week lifespan. Unless Samsung is creating anything more sophisticated for this undisclosed smartwatch, the Galaxy Aero might provide a similar software experience, thereby making it a watch-shaped fitness band.
