North Carolina will receive Apple Wallet driving licenses, but there will be a catch. – North Carolina is getting ready to add digital IDs to the iPhone, and Apple Wallet is gaining another driver’s license after California and Ohio. Residents won’t be able to upload their license straight to Apple Wallet when the state launches its mobile ID program. Rather, North Carolina will launch its own NC Wallet app initially, then in early 2027, support for Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet is anticipated.
Support for Apple Wallet will be added later.
It is anticipated that the first NC mobile ID rollout will occur prior to the significant wallet integrations. As part of its efforts to modernize its technology, North Carolina’s DMV has been seeking a mobile driver’s license solution. According to the state, the digital credential will give citizens an additional means of proving their identification without carrying the actual card.
The Apple Wallet version ought to function similarly to Apple’s current digital IDs. consumers will be able to authenticate themselves on their iPhone once it is supported. Apple’s approach is made to allow consumers to decide what information is given instead of just giving over the full license. In an increasing number of U.S. locales, Apple currently accepts digital state IDs and driver’s licenses. North Carolina isn’t yet on the list of states that actively embrace Apple Wallet ID, though.
The physical license will remain in place.
There is a crucial distinction to be made here: a digital license is meant to be an extra choice rather than a quick substitute for the physical card. Residents of North Carolina won’t suddenly be asked to leave their plastic license at home because the state’s mobile ID scheme is being created in tandem with the current physical credential.
Because of this, the eventual connection with Apple Wallet is more practical than innovative. Although the actual driver’s license shouldn’t be thrown in the drawer just yet, having it with payment cards, airline passes, and other credentials is a logical next step for folks who already always carry their iPhone.
