Xbox suffers as Microsoft slashes 4,800 jobs – Microsoft is laying off 4,800 people and reorganizing its Xbox division in one of its most significant personnel cutbacks this year, eliminating thousands of gaming division roles and separating four studios from the company.
The IT titan announced the cutbacks on Monday, July 6, stating that approximately 2% of its workers would be affected. Xbox is restructuring its gaming operations under CEO Asha Sharma, resulting in around 3,200 layoffs and more job losses until fiscal year 2027.”The way technology is built, deployed, and used is changing faster than at any other time in my career,” Microsoft’s chief people officer, Amy Coleman, wrote in a note to staff announcing the layoffs.
Xbox will lose almost one-fifth of its personnel.
In a statement to Xbox employees, CEO Asha Sharma stated that the game division’s restructure will result in about 3,200 job cuts, including 1,600 layoffs on July 6.”I understand that a year-long restructuring presents additional challenges,” Sharma wrote. “Unfortunately, it is not possible to make all the necessary changes in a single day.”
Sharma, a former Meta and Instacart executive, took over as Xbox CEO in February, following the departure of longtime gaming boss Phil Spencer.
Four studios will be split away.
In addition to labor reductions, Microsoft is closing four game studios. Sharma stated that Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will become distinct entities. Meanwhile, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have reached an agreement to transition to new ownership.
The changes are one of the most substantial for Xbox in recent years, affecting both workforce and Microsoft’s portfolio of game developers.
Layoffs occur after employee buyouts.
The latest cuts come just months after Microsoft offered voluntary buyouts to approximately 7% of its US workforce in April.
Coleman reported that over one-third of eligible employees accepted the offers, and the company may consider similar programs in the future.”Decisions like these are never easy, and you have my assurance that we are constantly looking for ways to reduce the need for job cuts,” Coleman wrote.
