Looking to cancel PlayStation Plus? Sony could send you a proposition. – Ever tried to cancel a subscription only to be confronted with a “Wait! What about the “Here’s a discount!” message? It appears like PlayStation has begun to mimic that strategy. When attempting to terminate their PlayStation Plus memberships, an increasing number of consumers claim receiving discounts of up to 50%, making it one of Sony’s most significant retention deals in recent years.
Not every individual has the exact same deal.
According to posts on Reddit, the deals appear to differ depending on the subscription tier and length. The most generous offer appears to be 50% off a three-month PlayStation Plus Extra membership, with other customers reporting 25% to 33% savings on longer 12-month memberships. So yet, there does not appear to be a universal offer, implying that Sony is specifically targeting subscribers who are going to abandon the service.
Interestingly, the timing has piqued the community’s interest. The offers emerged shortly after Sony’s contentious decision to discontinue first-party PS5 disc creation, prompting several users to publicly cancel their PS Plus subscriptions in protest. While there is no evidence that the discounts are directly related to the backlash, the overlap has undoubtedly stoked speculation online.
A standard retention tactic, but with larger discounts.
Retention discounts are not new. Streaming services, internet providers, and even gyms have long provided special bargains to clients who are about to leave. The extent of the reduction in this case is unique. Outside of limited-time events like Days of Play, Sony rarely reduces PlayStation Plus by more than 50%, so these deals stand out.
It’s unclear whether this will become a permanent element of Sony’s subscription plan. For the time being, it appears to be a focused trial rather than a public sale. If you’re considering canceling your PS Plus membership, don’t be surprised if PlayStation decides to keep you around.
