Apple revealed today that Apple Maps will be installed natively on the screens of Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK, a toolset that enables manufacturers to integrate Apple Maps directly into their dashboards, will make the capability available in 2027.
An infotainment system that doesn’t require a phone plug
Nowadays, CarPlay is typically required to get Apple Maps onto a car’s main screen. Ford’s future UEV will extract Apple Maps data directly thanks to the native Apple Maps integration, providing drivers with turn-by-turn navigation with natural language prompts, real-time traffic and incident alerts, and comprehensive place cards for search results—all without the need for a paired phone.
Additionally, drivers will receive route planning that takes battery preconditioning and charging stops into consideration. These kinds of details will probably have a greater impact on Ford’s planned low-cost electric car than on more expensive models with larger battery packs.

Giving navigation to Apple rather than developing it internally is a sensible decision for a firm promoting its upcoming EV lineup around cheap. Drivers who now use Apple Maps via wireless CarPlay, which activates as soon as they get behind the wheel, might not see the need for it.
