As Ebenezer Scrooge, Johnny Depp crashes a Comic-Con panel – At San Diego Comic-Con, it’s Christmas in July. On July 23, Johnny Depp surprised convention goers by unexpectedly appearing at an entirely unrelated session as Ebenezer Scrooge from his upcoming film “Ebenezer.”
In full Scrooge attire, complete with a top hat, cane, and candle, Depp made an appearance on stage to wrap up Collider’s Directors on Directing panel, which was unrelated to either Depp or Scrooge: Zach Cregger and the filmmaking combo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were interviewed about their careers and forthcoming films, “Resident Evil” and “Mayday,” respectively.
Before the words “Johnny Depp is Ebenezer” appeared on the convention hall screen, the lights in the room abruptly went out as the discussion was coming to an end. Then, in the role of the “A Christmas Character” grump, Depp took the stage to give a monologue.He questioned the Comic-Con attendees, “Have you all no lives?” “No accountability? Why are you here? I don’t really care, but because you’ve come this far, I’d want to give this candy to each and every one of you.”
The sounds of shackles and a voice yelling Scrooge’s name could be heard as Depp pulled out candy and tossed it onto the stage before heading off. “Oh, not once more. Jacob Marley,” he declared as he left amid cheers from the audience.
The first “Ebenezer” trailer aired after Depp departed. It was made available online as well.Director Ti West’s “Ebenezer” is Depp’s first significant Hollywood film in years after Johnny and his ex-wife Amber Heard went through a high-profile defamation battle in which both stars accused one another of domestic abuse.
The meta idea that Depp has made a comeback is prominently emphasized in the teaser. “He brought us Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter,” reads the opening text on the screen, alluding to Depp’s most well-known film characters. The maestro of misfits is back this Thanksgiving.Then, in the role of Scrooge, Depp remarks, “It’s good to be back,” which may be interpreted as coming directly from the actor.
As part of the event, he also appeared in front of an audience at an installation in San Diego as Scrooge.
