To oppose the Republican Party in Texas, California lawmakers have approved Newsom’s redistricting plan – Legislators in California have put new redistricting plans—drawn by Democrats—up for a special election just one day after Republicans in Texas’s House approved similar plans. In a vote that might gain Democrats five U.S. House seats, the California legislature on August 21st approved Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to suspend the state’s current congressional districts, which were created by an independent committee, and replace them with new maps.
Republican politicians in Texas are attempting to impose new redistricting plans at the behest of President Trump, and the redistricting effort in California is a reaction to that. Republicans in Texas are hoping that by passing new redistricting plans on August 21, the state’s Senate will grant them five more U.S. House seats.
However, according to Newsom, Texas “fired the first shot,” and California is “neutralizing” the situation by providing American voters with “a fair chance.”
“We got here because the President of the United States is struggling, we got here because the President of the United States is one of the most unpopular presidents in US history, we got here because he recognizes that he will lose the election,” Newsom said prior to implementing his redistricting plan. The elections are being rigged by him. He is positioning himself to assert that the elections were not won in a fair and square manner. Peep into the state of affairs in America in the year 2025.
Meanwhile, Corrin Rankin, chairwoman of the California Republican Party, referred to Newsom’s moves as gerrymandering and promised that her party will combat the “corruption” through legal action and voter turnout.
“Governor Newsom has signed into law a blatant power grab, rushed through in secret by Democrats in the very kind of backroom process Californians voted to abolish when they created the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission,” Rankin wrote in a press release. “Voters established the Commission to guarantee fairness and transparency, and Democrats just shredded it to protect their own power.”
The Golden State is plotting to foil Trump’s and Texas’s
Robert Rivas, speaker of the California assembly, made the statement following the vote that Trump does not trust in the American democratic system. “And it’s clear that he will do whatever it takes to hold on to power,” added Rivas. No one wants to hold Donald Trump and the Republicans responsible but themselves. Certainly not in California—or in the United States of America.
Voters in a special election in California will have the chance to decide whether or not to impose redistricting on the state after the 2030 U.S. Census, so any changes made now would only be temporary. Voters in California still have the chance to reject the proposed redistricting maps, but those in Texas will be put into force as soon as Gov. Greg Abbott signs the plan into law.
“This special election will waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on a rushed special election at a time when Californians are struggling with the cost of living, crime, and homelessness,” Rankin, the head of the California GOP, stated. “It’s an abuse of taxpayer money and a direct attack on democracy in our state.”
Contrarily, Newsom has faith in the California people’s ability to help level the playing field. Of California’s 52 congressional seats, 43 are held by Democrats at the present time. A total of five Republican seats would be flipped to Democratic strongholds under the Newsom-supported plans.
“When all things are equal and we’re all playing by the same set of rules, there’s no question that the Republican party will be the minority party in the House of Representatives next year,” said Newsom. “I couldn’t be more proud of the extraordinary leaders who are standing up for the rule of law by standing up for the principles and the enduring values of the Founding Fathers.”
