Samsung Galaxy XR Mixed Reality Headset Is Here: Price, Release Date, Features – Both Samsung and Google have discontinued their respective mobile virtual reality headsets, and it has been five years since they did so. For a second attempt, the businesses have joined up with a more audacious goal in the mixed reality space, beginning with the Samsung Galaxy XR. It is the first headset powered by Android XR, which is a new platform for smart glasses and headsets built from the ground up on Android and Google’s Gemini assistant. Today, the Galaxy XR may be purchased in South Korea and the United States for a price of $1,800. For a period of twelve months, you can finance it at a rate of $149 per month. While this is a major improvement above typical virtual reality headsets such as the Meta Quest 3, it is also a big reduction in price in comparison to the $3,499 Vision Pro, which Apple is updating this week with the new M5 computing processor. The Galaxy XR is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, and I had the opportunity to demo the headset once more last week at a closed-door media event in New York City that was hosted by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm. However, my initial hands-on experience with the headset from the previous year was not significantly different from what I experienced this time around. You can learn more about my demonstration here. The official name and the price were the two major questions that needed to be answered, but those issues have finally been resolved.
The Galaxy XR boasts to accomplish nearly everything that Apple’s iPhone does. Pop the headset on and you’ll be able to see the room you’re in through the pancake lenses and layer virtual material over it, or whisk yourself off to another planet. Your hands are the input (controllers are available as a separate purchase), and it employs eye tracking to see what you wish to select. You may access all your favorite apps from the Google Play Store; XR apps will have a “Made for XR” logo.
Samsung’s headset is more plasticky and doesn’t seem as nice as Apple’s Vision Pro—I observed the attached battery pack on a sample device appeared well-worn with fingerprint smudges on the coating. But this basic construction makes it feel substantially lighter to wear. I wasn’t able to use it for a lengthy period, but it felt comfortable, with the only drawback being a sweaty brow after a 25-minute session with it on. The headgear felt heated at the top, but the battery pack remained pretty cool. Speaking of, the battery lasts 2 hours or 2.5 hours if you’re solely viewing video.
