Amazon Web Services and SAP cooperation delivers sovereign cloud capabilities to European firms in regulated areas with €7.8bn investment – The integration of SAP Sovereign Cloud with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is set to take place soon. This will allow clients in highly regulated industries to take advantage of AI innovation prospects by combining SAP’s knowledge of corporate applications with AWS’s cloud architecture.
The SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities are a result of the companies’ long-standing partnership, which spans over 16 years. They are cloud solutions that are optimized for security and meet the needs of regulated industries and government organizations.
By the year 2025, the first region of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be up and running in Brandenburg, Germany. Amazon has invested €7.8bn (about $9.2bn) on this infrastructure. Providing solutions to meet digital sovereignty criteria, such as data residency, operational autonomy, and resilience demands, the service targets public sector organizations and clients in highly regulated industries.
We’re ecstatic that the AWS European Sovereign Cloud will offer SAP Sovereign Cloud features. According to David Brown, AWS’s VP of compute and machine learning, this will provide organizations with more flexibility in meeting their sovereignty requirements through the use of cloud technology.
Virtually unrelated to any of AWS’s other regions, the European Sovereign Cloud runs its own show. Technical controls, sovereign guarantees, and legal protections ensure that the infrastructure does not rely on systems outside the EU. Customers can utilize the entire capacity of AWS with the same security, resilience and service portfolio offered in existing regions.
David continues: “SAP and AWS share a mutual vision: we want to ensure that our customers have access to sovereignty solutions, so organisations can focus on innovation and driving outcomes. We’re looking forward to our continuous partnership with SAP and witnessing the ways that organizations across Europe will innovate with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.” Amazon Web Services and SAP cooperation delivers sovereign cloud capabilities to European firms in regulated areas with €7.8bn investment
SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities grow globally
Australia and New Zealand have been using SAP Sovereign Cloud on AWS since 2023, the UK and Canada since 2024, and India and Canada since 2025. SAP Sovereign Cloud helps organizations to innovate securely, comply with local laws, and grow according to their requirements. The solutions on AWS European Sovereign Cloud will initially feature SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP. These provide customers with a basis for managing business operations and sensitive data and maintaining compliance with regulations.
The collaboration focuses on merging SAP’s capabilities and enterprise expertise with AWS infrastructure and operational expertise. This combination serves customers’ expanding digital sovereignty needs across Europe, particularly for organizations in industries subject to stringent regulatory supervision.
Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, Customer Services and Delivery, explains: “With our expanded SAP Sovereign Cloud offerings, we’re enabling customers across all industries to harness the power of cloud innovation and AI.” Amazon Web Services and SAP cooperation delivers sovereign cloud capabilities to European firms in regulated areas with €7.8bn investment
