In lieu of her brother Lindsey, Darline Graham Nordone was sworn in as a US senator. – Three days after her brother, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, passed away, Darline Graham Nordone became the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
On July 14, Graham Nordone was sworn in by longtime Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, the Senate’s president pro tempore, after being escorted into Senate chambers at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, by South Carolina Senator Tim Scott and Alabama Senator Katie Britt.
Graham Nordone, 64, was sworn in one day after being nominated to the position by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. Graham’s aorta, the body’s main artery, was torn, resulting in a life-threatening condition that led to his untimely death on July 11. He was seventy-one.
In a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump had called for her appointment. Graham Nordine will now hold the Senate seat until January 3, 2027, at which point the victor of the eagerly anticipated election in November will take over.
Despite her lack of prior political experience, Graham Nordone has stated that she is confident in her ability to handle the job with the help of her brother’s staff and colleagues.
At a time when the Republican majority’s margin is extremely narrow and GOP leaders have had difficulty achieving some of Trump’s goals, Graham Nordone’s presence in the Senate helps maintain the Republican majority.
Graham Nordone anticipated following in her brother’s footsteps.
Graham Nordone stated that she plans to carry on her late brother’s efforts in remarks made upon her Senate appointment on July 13. He was an exceptional leader who put in more effort than anybody else to improve the state, the nation, and the world, according to her.Graham Nordone stated, “It is such a privilege to get to finish some of his important work, and I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry on my brother’s efforts on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States.”
Graham Nordone may or may not run for a permanent Senate seat.
Graham Nordone, a grandmother and married mother of two adult children who has worked primarily in workforce development and disability services rather than elected politics, is unsure if she will compete for her brother’s Palmetto State Senate seat.
After overcoming a number of opponents, including rich businessman Mark Lynch in last month’s Republican primary in South Carolina, Lindsey Graham was running for a fifth term in the Senate in this year’s midterm elections.
After defeating five primary opponents in June, Graham was predicted to run against Annie Andrews, the Democratic nominee. In 2022, Andrews, a pediatrician, lost a general election contest for the congressional seat held by GOP Representative Nancy Mace.
To replace Graham as their nominee, Republicans in South Carolina will need to have a special primary.
A number of names have surfaced as potential candidates, including Rep. Russell Fry, who represents South Carolina’s 7th Congressional District, and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Mace, who both unsuccessfully ran for governor earlier this year. There have also been references to current Representative William Timmons and former Representative Trey Gowdy.
August 11 is the date of the special primary election.
