Since part of Trump’s troubled renovation, Lincoln Memorial’s Reflective Pool is being drained again. – The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is once again being drained by crews as President Donald Trump’s troubled attempt to renovate the canal goes far beyond his original plan to have it completed by July 4 in honor of the country’s 250th birthday.
Initially, the president predicted that his improvements would continue for a century. However, the water was plagued by an algal bloom just weeks after the project was supposed to be finished last month, and bits of the new covering seemed to be peeling off the bottom.
Critics claim the peeling is the result of poor repair work, while Trump has attributed it to vandals.
In an interview published earlier this week, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum—whose department is in charge of the National Park Service—told conservative podcaster Katie Miller that the fresh round of draining was scheduled. Additionally, he stated that there may still be debris from a massive Independence Day fireworks display above the National Mall in the water.
Burgum instructed Miller, the spouse of deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller, to “drain the water and clean up the fireworks stuff.” “Make repairs to the vandalism.” Refill it.
Trump has led several initiatives in the nation’s capital, including the construction of the Reflecting Pool. Most notably, he proposes to construct a massive arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery and demolished the White House’s East Wing to construct a $400 million ballroom.
He first declared that he hoped to finish beautifying the Reflecting Pool this spring in time for the country’s 250th birthday celebrations.
Trump ordered that the bottom be painted “American flag blue” when the water was drained. “The goal is to have it done, at this higher level, prior to July 4th — We are ahead of schedule,” the president said on the pool’s social media page in May.
But as soon as the basic work was completed, issues started to arise. Trump accused vandals, but court records later revealed that the National Park Service notified the U.S. Park Police of an incident on June 9 in which the pool’s new liner was cut by a sharp knife or razor.
Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn entered a not guilty plea in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. The Reflecting Pool was purposefully damaged by the Superior Court. Hearn claims that after being instructed to do so by a park employee, he reached into the pool to inspect the peeled sealant and released a piece.
His lawyers and other opponents of the Trump administration have mocked the case as a misuse of prosecutorial authority and insist he is being used as a scapegoat for the subpar work done to renovate the Reflecting Pool.
Online court records show that at least three additional individuals have been charged with misdemeanors in the same court for allegedly taking paint fragments from the Reflecting Pool. During their first court appearances on Wednesday, all three entered not guilty pleas.
For the Independence Day celebration, which included what Trump claimed to be the biggest fireworks display in history, the pool was closed. As part of the latest round of repairs, the president had stated that the pool would need to be drained again.
Additionally, Burgum stated that the Trump administration will not solicit bids for the upcoming repairs. “We’ll use the same company because they did a fantastic job,” he said last weekend on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Virginia-headquartered Atlantic Industrial Coatings received $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the swimming pool’s concrete floor, while Ohio-based Green Water Solutions, also known as Greenwater Services, was given a $1.7 million contract to build a water-purification system in the Reflecting Pool.
The pool project is being investigated by Democratic senators and members of the House, who are also looking for information regarding the amount of taxpayer financing involved.
