The anticipated camera AirPods Pro from Apple may have encountered a significant obstacle – Bloomberg revealed in May that Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods Pro had proceeded to “advanced” testing and would soon be going into mass production. I was anticipating them because I had used both the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3.
A leaker has refuted that this week. The project has been “suspended,” according to a post made on X by prototype collector and sporadic Apple leaker Kosutami. There were no other details given. According to MacRumors, the article seemed to rectify an earlier June update in which Kosutami had referred to the product’s development “case” as “concluded,” implying the change was significant.
What was the intended purpose of the camera in the AirPods Pro?
The integrated cameras weren’t used for taking pictures or videos. They were created specifically to provide visual data about a wearer’s environment to Apple’s AI helper, Siri. Consider it like giving Siri eyes that can see through your ears.
The leaker initially stated in February that the AirPods Pro would be able to communicate with Apple Intelligence through infrared cameras. Later, such assertion was confirmed by other trustworthy sources. According to reports, the product has been under development for about four years.
Indeed, according to reports, Apple intended to start in the first half of 2026. It’s already past that window.
Is Siri the reason this product is failing?
As far as I can tell, Siri itself may be the cause of the frequent delays. Similar to how it handled Siri’s AI rollout, Bloomberg previously reported that Apple could delay the release of the AirPods if it wasn’t happy with the caliber of its Visual Intelligence capabilities.
Another factor might have been the continuous lack of memory chips. One crucial disclaimer is that Kosutami’s record isn’t as spotless. About ten months before to the iPhone 16 Pro’s release, they accurately predicted that it would have a metal-enclosed battery. However, their predictions that the AirPods Pro 3 would be released in August 2024 did not come to pass.
From where I’m reading this, suspended might indicate delayed; it could also mean canceled. Which is true is only known by Apple.
